30" long by 12"wide by 12" deep.
It is about 18-20 gallons.

I just picked this up at a garage sale for $5 and it was all messy and grimy, but still intact
- it has a hood with space for 1 fluorescent tube.

1) Any comments on tank size?

I plan on adding cherry barbs, cardinals, shrimp, some snails, corys eventually

2) Would a fluval 105 work for filtration?

3) would I be able to just add a single 40w? tube?

thanks for the advice

Seems the filter works up to max sizes of 26 gallons, so that should work.

As for the bulb, will you be adding plants?

Nothing to say about the tank size other than it's a good thing it's wide, not tall. :p

Nice find, especially for $5. It's a 18.7 gallon tank. If you get undemanding plants, you can get away with a single 20W bulb. Most common hoods have a maximum of 18-20W per tube. Hopefully, you can find a warning or info label on the hood what the maximum wattage is. If not I wouldn't try a single 40W bulb. If you want 40W, get a double light hood.

thanks for the fast replies

wow, thought the tank might be bad because it isn't very deep or wide.(bad for planting?)
yah, i'm planning on adding plants that can go with 2wpg, so you would recommend getting a hood that will have 2 tubes then?

- any strategies for planting such a narrow tank?
