I would go with a 30 gallon long, just because a 55 corner is going to be too small for cichlids, footprint wise.

Cichlids only utilize the a water a foot or so above the substrate, so having a taller tank than long is not very practical for Cichlids.

Yellow labs will do well in a 30 gallon long.

What are the Dimensions of the 30 gallon?

you could keep a goby cichlid, marlieri(sp?), brichardi, and caudopunctatus to name a few in a 30 long with no problems, i just don't know about the compatibility and exact numbers. I would personally stick to lake tanganyika, the fish i listed are all from there. I wouldn't recommend any malawi's, even the yellow labs.

I have a couple yellow labs in my 29 gallon, and they do just fine.

Yellow labs are one of the least aggressive Cichlids form lake malawi.

But like lyotim88 said, try to keep the Cichlid selection from the same lake, so if you did go with labs, than the other fish from that lake are more aggressive than labs.

So it is probably the best idea to go with Cichlids from lake tanganyka like lyntim88 said.

It depends on the dimensions, and also depends on what types of african cichlids you wish to keep. The term african cichlid covers tons and tons of different types of fish, from different lakes and different environments.

30 Gallon long is still usually quite small for most of the more popular african cichlids though. While yellow labs may be alright in that size tank for a while, you have to remember they still can grow to around 5-6 inches no matter what size tank they are in. Another thing most people forget is the fact that there are no peaceful african cichlids, Yellow labs just happen to be less aggressive than most. Doesn't mean they aren't still aggressive compared to most tropical fish.
