After having tropical tanks when i was growing up I decided to start up a tropical tank, because I enjoy the fish and for my son who is nearly a year old,

I started with 5 platys, one of which didnt seem right even when I bought it and unfortunately didnt survive,

I have added 2 dalmation mollies since,

But now i think i have a pregnant platy.. shock horror lol

I invested in a breeding net after I thought another of the platys was pregnant, though now i think she is a he, I think i have 3 males and 1 female!??

Im guessing there are some knowledgeable people on here and wondered if you could help?

Ill add pictures off all 6 fish and if you could help me on sexes, platy breed and 'spot' the suspected 'pregnant one'

Lets see I'm pretty sure platy 4 is the pregnant one.....and i think the rest are males. I can't really tell on the dalmations though because its a bit blurry. 2nd molly looks like a female, but try to get a clearer picture of the first one. If you can't catch a pic, I know how you feel lol. They dart around the tank and its like impossible to get a pic! hehe good luck :good: And if there's any fry, post some pictures!

thanks jade,
Yes platy 4 is the one i think is pregnant,
The black dot has appeared almost during today?

Im guessing it is going to be a while yet before I should put her in the breeding net,

Im pretty sure the darker mollie is the male, I asked for a male and female and am sure the lighter of the two is the female,

Thanks again and i will add pics if there are any fry :D xx

platy 1 and 4 are females and i think they are both pregnant. I also think you have one male and one female molly

Nooo dont say that, lol
I was kind of hoping it was just the one,
It would make sense for platy 1 to be a female, 'it' has got rather large in the 2 weeks ive owned 'it' seems to be changing shape daily,
but judging by fin I was sure 'it' was a he??

Well i took another look at the picture for platy 1 and it could be a male but its awfuly round around the belly area the picture is deceiving cause the anal fin could be closed making it look like a male. So if platy one's anal fin stays straight all the time then its a male but if it unfold in to a triangle then its a female. So you will have to let us know which way "it" turns out..lol

I can't see molly 1, too fuzzy, but molly 2 is female and so are platy 1 and 4. In a tank like that at least the 2 female platies will be carrying fry and the second molly may be too.

I actually think platy 1 is a male because he/she has a long and small fin not a fan like one but i might be mistaken but i think you only have one female which is prenant

I really wouldnt get worried i have 3 male and 1 female platy should of been the other way around silly fish shop ladie but they are find and the female is pregnant and there is no fin bitting or fighting.

:D

imo i would say platies 1,2,3 are all male with 4 being the pregnant female, can't tell with mollie 1 but mollie 2 looks female. :)

OK, Ive been watching her all morning, (whilst playing with my son)
And shes really being bugged by the male platys and is 'twisting' her body?
She seems to have a white spot below her anal fin, although im no expert? lol

Shes not overly big though and i wouldnt say she has 'squared'
xx

hmm twisting? maybe she's trying to keep the males from getting at her. That's weird I've never had my mollies do that :/

If you do get fry, are you planning to keep them in a net and raise them, or see who doesn't get eaten?

she's probably twisting to avoid the male.
If she's got a white spot below her anal fin she could be getting near dropping.it's quite noticable when she becomes square :)
