My Betta is in a 3 gallon tank- My grandfather picked up a filter today- And it was the smallest one they had available- a 5-15 gallon filter. would that be usable in a 3 gallon? I am so confused...I can't find ANYTHING for less than 5 gallons. Help? Thank you :) 5-15 Gal Filter

well i'm not that experienced but i would say, the bigger the better :)

Its perfectly ok im running a 10Gal filter in a 6 gallon tank :) however i do have more fish!
Should keep the water conditions nice and clean.

Maybe get some shrimp as well as a clean up crew?

It will be fine, we measure the power of our filter usually by lph (litres per hour) I normally aim for 5x turnover in an hour so for example in my 200 litre I have a 1000lph filter. having a filter designed for a bigger tank isn't a bad thing. My only worry is that the flow may be too strong for a Betta, so try to keep the flow on a minimal but maintain oxygenation in the tank.

Is it 3us gallon or 3uk gallon? Because a 3uk Gallon is too small for a Betta, In my opinion so is a 3us Gal but people would argue it's okay, it's just my opinion :good:

As said you could put some Shrimp in that tank just as a little something :)

James.

I'm sure you will be fine.. as long as the filter isn't creating too strong of a current or too strong of a suction within your 3-gallon home aquarium. Just keep an eye on it and make sure that it's still a comfortable living environment for your fish. You might want to add more stress coat in the water to ensure that the filter isn't getting rid of too much of the beneficial bacteria from your aquarium. Good luck!!!

The filter would be creating beneficial bacteria, not getting rid of it.

AceyLeigh, do you have some mature filter media for your new filter? That would cycle the tank almost immediately. And if the flow seems too strong you can usually divert it in a number of ways, such as placing a rock or decoration right where it comes out. I'm all for overfiltering, rather than underfiltering.
