feeling inspried tonight when i took mr pinchy to his new home... seeing all these fabulous massive tanks and wanting a bigger tank....

seeing as i live at home i have to convince my mum - she jokingly suggested letting me have the dining room area of our house for a tank (whihc is about 10 foot long by about 6 foot depth) - yes please :hyper: but somehow i think that will remain a dream lol!!

anyhow

i have 'my space' in the lounge to play with -

4 foot max... by about 2 foot depth - but height isnt an issue as long as i dont take the p...

im thinking about 3 foot high? which will give me abtou 150 gallons right???

is 3 foot high stupid ??? really would love a bigger tank - would put this upstairs int the back room which would allow a 6 foot tank by whatever but its the structural thing of the room :(

thoughts?

Hi millie

I can see two potential problems

firstly the height, I have thought about doing something similar in the past until i found that the cost increases dramatically when you start increasing the height of the tank, Also a tank that is 3 foot high can't hold anymore fish than a 2 foot, because the surface area will remain the same.

Also you may need to get a structural engineer in to your house to determine what weight you can have upstairs,
IMO even a 4x2x2 would be too heavy to go upstairs in most houses

thanks :)

the tank i saw that inspired me was 8 foot wide - and at least 4 foot high i think lol..... it was big anyhow.....

i cant have too deep :( i only ahve the height to play with unless i can convince my mum to change the dining room round hahah

One problem I see with a 3ft tall tank is not being able to reach the bottom. The average person will not be able to reach the bottom which will make cleaning and changing around decor a pain. :good:

very true lol hadnt thought of that !!!

wish i could have another upstairs - but :(

im thinking of getting a few smaller tanks for now :)

You should always consider the SAFETY aspect of tall tanks as well as the practicalities of being able to do maintenance on them. People have been injured and even killed falling onto tall tanks during maintenance.

3 foot high tank could accidently get knocked over.Stands for tanks are usually at least the same height of the tank. So if the stand was 90cm (3 foot) like the tank it would be difficult to reach into and to see into. You'd have to be very tall. You could try to get a lower stand but it might not be able to support the weight.

A 4 x 2 x 2 would be a nice size, but I wouldnt go for anything above 2ft high, its a nightmare to do maintenance, I had a tank not long ago that once on the stand I couldnt reach anywhere near the bottom of the tank, even standing on a chair I couldnt reach the bottom, which made putting ornaments in pretty hairy I can tell ya, cleaning wasnt so much of an issue as the syphon reached with my arm fully stretched out but it wasnt comfortable. Im 5ft 7, so unless your very tall, I wouldnt go any higher.

someting like a RIO 240 or 300. thats a nice size.

thanks everyone

ive decided to get a few smaller tanks lol

seen a nice 50 litre marine tank that cane go upstairs.. :)
