I currently have a 10 gallon that has been set up for about 6 months. I just recently bought a 29 gallon to upgrade my 10 g into. I do not yet have a stand or hood so I am just waiting to collect "funds". When I am ready to cycle, I have heard that it is easier to raise the temperature in there to gather bacteria. I am going to do a fishless cycle. Would it be alright to bring the temp up and put some of the gunk from the bottom of my 10 g to speed up the process? Thanks.

Can't you just move the filter from the 10g onto the 29g? You'll probably want to upgrade the filter too though, so you could just take all of the dirty old filter media out of the 10g filter and move it into the 29g filter. Then add fish slowly until the bacteria can catch up with the load. Unless you're doing two separate tanks rather than just upgrading.

Yes, agree with Katty's question. It depends on whether you want to expand to having both the 29 and the 10g running with fish or whether you just plan to move everything to the 29g and retire the 10g or change it to being a quarantine/hospital tank (once you have an established community tank, it becomes a good idea to quarantine your fish for a month or so to see if they have disease, before adding them to your main tank.)

Fish populations and their tank filter form a balance and can be moved -together- to a new tank, even if the new tank has a different water volume. But taking mature filter media out of an established filter and putting it in a new filter ideally requires a (usually short) fishless cycle to "test" the successful move of the mature media.

Do you have an internal box filter, an undergravel filter or some other type of filter on your 10 gallon?
