My wife has bought herself a 25lt fluval chi, she wants to add a heater and have it as a mini tropical. She wants neons and we wanted to know how many she could safely have? I'm guessing 6 or more seeing as they're schooling fish but I'm thinking 6 would be too many for 25lts. Any other stocking ideas would be apreciated?

Thanks for the link. I'm trying to sway her towards a male figther fish, one of my favorites but she thinks one fish will be boring.
Could this tank be used to breed endlers? Any fry would be tranfered to a bigger tank when big enough.

No problem, its a very helpful list. I kept a male betta/fighter in a 30L tank a couple of years ago. Great fish, very interactive wee guys. He got so used to just seeing me he'd flare at strangers that came close to the glass for a look
By the looks of the list you can keep a small group of endlers in a tank that size. I've never kept them so I have no idea if that sort of plan would work. I'm sure google will provide some answers or someone who has/had endlers may come along and let you know.

I think Endlers would be lovely in there :) Maybe some shrimp too?

Would shrimp bother any fry?
And would they work as a clean up crew?

I'm not sure on the fry, sorry. People like to use shrimp for clean up, yes. Though I think they need their own food as well.

Unfortunately, as Kiwi said, neons aren't suitable, they're active fish that require at least a 60cm long tank.

A school of mosquito rasboras would look really cool!

The endlers would also work well!

I'm leaning towards endlers and cherry shrimp if possible. In a way I'm glad neons won't suit, plenty of room in the bigger tank for them. I really like the idea of breeding something, I'm guessing there's a possibility the shrimp may breed as well. Next question has to be how many and how quickly can I add? The tank is up and running a while and is ready for fish but can I for example go and buy say 5 endlers and 5 cherry shrimp and add them all in one go without dumping too much of a load on the filter? Unfortunately from where we live its an 80 mile round trip for the likes of endlers and cherry shrimp.

Cherry shrimp have a very low bioload but need pristine water and will breed like rabbits when conditions are right - you can get around this by having no males in the group. they are really charming in a group especially with no possible predators around and with plants and moss to play on :)

Have you cycled the tank?
Yes, the tank is cycled. It has been running fishless for just over a month using water from my other tank.

I'm a big fan of moss but at the end of the day the tank belongs to my wife, I just need to give her a gentle push towards my ideas.

Have you been adding ammonia? If not then unfortunately it has just been sitting there doing nothing :/

We've been adding Interpets filter start.

try doing a water test for ammonia, nitrites and nitrates, then add a 3ppm dose of ammonia. If the ammonia and nitrites come up 0 after 24 hours, then your filter start has done its job (sorry not familiar with the brand). If there is still ammonia and nitrites, then your tank still hasn't finished cycling. Hope this helps :)
