24G Nano Cube DX Nano Reef Setup

The light worked out great. I originally found it at Costco (meaning the rear illumination from the outside, right?) I have seen it once at Home Depot too. SH

oh no..... I hope you dont mind me hijacking, and im really only on pg. 9 in my reading of this. I just posted ahead because only yesterday i bought my very first sw setup. I have been studying a long time. its an eclipse 12 gallon, with a hydrometer, instant ocean salt, a stealth heater, a little (cheap i think) light, and a bunch of chems to help. But i think i just screwed up. I added all my sand. I havent added salt yet, and i wont until i hear back so plz help asap. Can i cycle with the sand in there, or do i have to somehow get it all out? Please tell me i can leave it in lol. Its some kind of reef sand

You should mix your salt first..remove a 1/3rd...then go ahead. Buy yourself a refractometer if you are going this far. It is much better. SH

steelhealr, you may have got another member to try out marine ;)
This journal has been a learning curve for me and after 4 years Im ready to try something more advanced. I will still be carrying out much more research until I feel Im really ready.
Am I right in saying that there is an improved model of this tank out on the market that has over come the glass cracking problem? If so, how would one tell that it was the new version? Are the tanks here (about half way down the page) the improved models?
Many thanks :).

Edit:
Make sure you buy a 2006 version which comes with a skimmer and serial number.

All sorted :D

This is a great post. I bought a 12g NC for my son as his first adventure into FW fish. I bought a 24g DX because I wanted to consolidate 2 smaller SW tanks I had. I used some old SW, new water, packaged live sand mixed with sand from the old tank and old ceramic bio material from my canister filter (old setup). The SW tank is cycling nicely. Here are my questions:

1. I transferred over my anemone and clown - why no anemones in a NC tank?
2. I am using a half size sponge in the 1 camber / all bio balls and the ceramic material in camber 2 with carbon. I am keeping it all in place with a sponge that was originally placed there by manufacturer. Otherwise the bio balls float around in th chamber 3 - is that a problem?

3. Once the tank is stable, I want to take the remaining base rock from my old tanks (they are still running), crush them and put them in chamber 2 - do you think the LR does better than ceramic material /bio balls?

4. Is it best to remove the sponges once all is stable (same Q for the FW tank).

Thx Andrew

Hi..lovely pics :)
I see you have amandarin Goby in there,, Stunning fish. Just wondered how he was feeding as I have heard many horror stories of them starving to death as they are such picky eaters. Was he eating frozen foods when you bought him?

I hope you are ready for your challenge regal....2 of your fish are truly the most difficult to keep alive in a nano tank. You will have to work very hard to keep them alive. I hope you are researched them and come up with a plan for feeding them. SH

i was told by my local lfs that because i was using the live rock out of my 4ft tank that the mandarin would have plenty of pods to eat he is also eating brine shrimp but since i put the goby in he doesn't seem to come out as much think this was badly reccomended give it 2 more weeks to see if he relaxes fingers crossed as for the orange spot goby he is a pig would he protect a pistol shrimp
steali what was the make an model of that thing that that gives a better 360 flow
thanks mick

The Orange Spotted Goby is one of the Gobys that will pair with a pistol shrimp IF you can find the specific type of pistol they go for. I don't think that the Madarin (a questionable choice in the first place) and the Goby are a good paring. They both spend the majority of their time around the bottom of the tank and my Goby (Orange spotted) would always defend it's territory if another fish was in it.

A wise move, better you make the decision now than when the fish is on it's last legs / gone AWOL.

Do you still have the pipefish?

I'm afraid most fish are going to out-compete if for food, which is why they are generally only kept with seahorses. With it in the tank you have very few options really :/
