Ok, here's the deal.... I'm planning on buying a used 20g tank & stand and am not sure what i'm going to do with it yet, except that I'm going to move everything from my 10g shrimp tank over in order to use the 10g as a grow-out tank for my multis.

I'm thinking I'd like to do some sort of breeding tank... maybe kribs? If you have any suggestions for me, that'd be great. I like to have several options to think through.

The pH here is pretty close to an even 7, and the water is slightly soft. I don't have the exact parameters, but I can get it if you think I need it.

no one has any ideas for me?? I'm still fairly new to the fish world, and would like to try something new. btw, I ended up buying 2 tanks... a 20g and a 27g long. any ideas are welcome!!

Congratulations on your new tank. I would recommend making the 20 gallon tank the grow out tank for your shrimp. Depending on the type of shrimp you have - you could even sell them for the profit. For the 27g tank I would recommend a bristlenose pleco with maybe some rams and cardinal tetras. Something nice, bright, colorful and looking very realistic.

Thanks for the suggestions. I may move the shrimp & Berta to the 20g and maybe add a few friends as well... As for the 27g, I'd really like to do something different. The setup you suggest is too similar to what I already have in my 55g. I'm thinking of using it to breed something, but I'm not sure what yet.

If your looking for something to breed kribensis are nice, easy to keep and easy to get into spawning mode. I have had mine for about 6 months now and the female has had 2 spawns neither have hatched as she has eaten them but it does take a while for them to learn and her second set of eggs lasted a lot longer than the first. She is in spawning mode again and I'm hopeful for wrigglers this time. Also there is a lot of info on breeding kribensis and everyone on here knows about kribensis.

Another suggestion would be an apistogramma. I have only had cacatuoides and I keep them in my community tank and they have never spawned or even paired up so they might be a bit more exciting to breed.

Just a couple of suggestions

I'm actually leaning towards breeding kribs... I had a female in my first tank as a kid (years ago) and although I didn't really understand her requirements, she was my favourite fish. I was devastated when she died. :(  I know now it was my fault, as I was washing the filter pad in tap water (!!!!) and wasn't really sure what I was doing.

if you want to breed something try guppies, platies or mollies!

I really want something that takes a bit more effort than livebearers... and I already have guppies & endlers. :)

The good thing with kribs is that you have more than one species so you can choose which species you like best and if you like albino you can also get albino versions although they won't produce all albino fry. I would definitely recommend kribs as they are a very nice fish to look at and also to observe there spawning behaviour and when they do get fry their parenting behaviour from Tom
