1- I have had my tank up and running for 7 mounths and i am using a whisper overhang filter. When should i change my filter pads.

2- I have a 50 gallon tank with convict. Jaguar. Green Terror and plec. I want to move the tank out my room into another. How should i do this. It has a sand bottem and blah blah. I manly just need help with removing the water.

1) Only when they are too torn/worn to be used. Since you said pads as in plural, I would suggest changing them at different times when you do finally change them. I would change the second one in the flow rate first and put the remaining one in the second position and the new one in the first position so it can start to build bacteria more quickly.

2) Tough question. Moving a tank is difficult. I am still putting off putting down new flooring in the area where my 75 gallon is because i can't figure out the best way to move it and put it back. One of the most important things you have to be careful about if you leave the substrate and some water in it is making sure you don't jolt it as all and cause the bottom to crack. With that much weight on the glass, it wouldn't take much. That is my biggest fear as I really don't want to take the substrate out and basically redo my tank.

1. They don't need to be changed or replaced unless they are falling apart or you want to change them. They should be cleaned in dechlorinated water about once a month.

2. Remove most of the water and put the fish in a bucket. You will defiantly need help moving the tank and take as much stuff out of the tank as possible. But leave the sand unless you still can't move it. I would set it back up with new water and make sure you keep the filter media moist during the move.

Edit- rdd1952 beat me

They shouldn't even really be changed even if you want to change them, only change them if they are too worn/torn for them not to work efficiently - and only change one at a time :good:

ok, how often should i clean the filter pads?

Whenever you see your flow start to decrease you should usually clean them then (in tank water). I give mine a check up every month or so just to make sure they aren't clogged up.

 I recently moved my 20 gallon hex from one room to another. What I did was buy three buckets from the dollar store and with a with a empty gallon water bottle I put the half the water into the buckets with the fish. I then moved the tank to the other room. Put the old water back in and the ornaments. I then added the clean water with declorator. It was moving the tank and a water change all at once. Everything worked out great. If you want to do it easier you can start from scratch and cycle your tank with bio-spira. With bio-spira you can add the fish right away. It's like instant cycle. I've used bio-spira in two of my tanks and it works great. For my 20 gallon it costs 11.99.

People have had varying results with bio-spira. The product is suppose to be refrigerated until it is used. If it gets too warm while being shipped to the store, or being stored at the store. the bacteria will die and it won't have any effect.

All your good bacteria are on those filter pads so when you change them you loose all you good bacteria therefore, they should be changed only when they are ripped and broken down. If you have two filters just change one at a time. Always fill them back up with tank water, never tap water.

I dump the access water out of there every two weeks but fill it back up with tank water. When you rinse them always always use tank water. Just rinse them gently.
