1)Will it get along with my 14" spotted gars when it is put in my 400 gal for a while?
2) Where can I get a baby alligator gar online?

Btw a close relativehas an insanley huge indoor pond with his own alligator gar. So don't worry about telling me their size and stuff, because he will forsure take it in when it outgrows my 400 gal.

how big of an alligator gar are you talking about?

you do realize they can grow 6-8+ feet....i hope he has a big pond

how big are your current gars? im assuming your talking about florida gars?

how many are currently in the tank? what are the dimensions of the tank?

any other fish in the tank?

Yes I know they get that big. His pond is big enough to house an alligator gar. And I clearly stated the other gars sizes. I just want to know if it an alligator gar will attack a different gar species in the tank and a site to get one.

i can not guarantee they will not attack one another, and i don't think anybody else here can either,

in my opinion there is a very good chance of it happening, so take that for what its worth, good luck

Thanks. Know any sites to order one online?

no, from what i have heard they are very hard to come by, unless you want to go on a fishing trip, Lol

HI Mikey welcome to the forum :)

I know you are quite set on this big fish but just wanted to ask why? They are a big responsibility and in all honesty they are a dangerous fish. Here in the UK we have a show called River Monsters and his Aligator Gar episode was one of the wildest! For me probably only beaten by the African Tiger Fish....

Just trying to wrack my brains to try and work out some alternatives see if they peak your interest as much as these monsters do. But if you already have the slightly smaller monster of the spotted gars.... its a bit of a toughy....

Cant help in sourcing Im afraid as I dont think I have ever seen or heard of one for sale... Are you in the US?

Also any chance of some pics of your relatives pond that just sounds amazing!! Would love to see something like that in the flesh!

I too have seen the show river monsters, it's on netflix. I am aware they can be dangerous but I am not careless and put my fingers in the water for fun. The reason I want an alligator gar is because I am just really interested in taking care of huge fish. Plus I really like the one my relative has, so I want one for my own. They are just so much more exciting to me than cichlids and ect. Also I am from canada, not the us. And sure, if I ever see him in the future again I will take a picture and post it.

you say you want to put him in with the spotted gars "for a while"

exactly how long is that?

if its only temporary you could consider a tank divider?

Have you considered the larger catfish?
Perhaps a Redtail or Tandanus?
Can Pacu interest you?

Personally I wouldnt reccomend keeping alligator gars altogether. They're wild creatures and will always be wild creatures. If you're dead set on a gar the only way is to go fishing ;) .

For a while I mean until it reaches a certain length. The width of the tank I want to put it in with the other gars is 36". When it reaches near 36" I will be moving it to the pond. Also talltree, I am interested in redtail catfish but I read online that a redtail tried eating their gar that is almost its length. So i am debating if i should get one because i love my gars, I raised them since they were like 5". It would be a shame if i got one and it did eat one of them in the future. lol

Can you post up some pics of your 400 gallon? Would love to see it.

Just out of interest have you tried any of the giant central american cichlids? Like Bocourti, Pearsai or even looking at stuff like Dovvi, Umbie or if you can find them Gorlliius? Vieja Argentina are a big character impressive fish as well.

What about an arrowanna?

I will post my 400 gal once I have it setup. My plan was once I have enough saved up I will start raising some other fish, build the 400 gallon, move my 14" gars in that tank and then later add the fish I plan to growout (alligator gar and other) in the tank. So you will see pics by the end of the summer, probably in September sometime.

No I haven't tried those fish Wills, but I do want to own a peacockbass and an arrowana for the 400 I want to setup.
