2 Platy Questions?

hi,

can anyone give me an idea of how many fry a platy can have?

i bought 2 "male" platy's on wednesday from local aquarium and so far today i have 9 platy fry. so they are not male but female.


also do you sex them in the same way as guppies?

A mature female play can have around 30 fry at a time, believe it or not! Yours will be having less as they're younger.

Mine had over 50.

thanks, no idea how old the platys are , but they are over an inch long.

They certainly ca, and do have more, but about 30 is the average

Platy fry records are on the order of 70 or more fry from a single drop but most people see around 30 to 40 fry from a more typical drop. A very young platy female may drop as few as 10 or 15 fry the first time out while a mature, well developed, female will often drop 50 or more.

well i got 10 fry BUT 1 of the platys is huge so i am guessing is pregnant (again???) now thinking i have 1 male and 1 female

You may not have a male and a female; livebearing fish can store sperm for about 6 months.

If you are not certain of the platy genders, why not judge it yourself? Rather than rely on the shop, try reading my post on determining livebearer sex, it is posted in the pinned topics. I would bet that with that thread under your belt, you can decide the gender of each of your fish in 30 seconds each.
