I purchased two "long finned" blue rams at the LPS about 2-3 weeks ago and I am assuming they are both males, but I am not 100% sure. One is considerably smaller than the other and A LOT less colorful. The larger one will occasionally chase him for about 5 seconds then leave him alone. They are both in a 29 gallon now and you can see what other fish I have in my aquarium in my sig. Could I get away with adding another pair of blue rams? Or would that be too many fish?

Two males or a male and a female? :dunno:

I just asked the very same question.

As far as your rams are concern, the paler one may be a female, the are usually less colorful, the chasing although quick, can be courting behavior.

The rams in my 75 displayed this behavior before spawning.

Looking at pictures, looked to be 2 males. Someone else can give you more accurate sexing.

Doesn't not look pale to me

Well she brightens up for the camera. In real life, she is very dull. She shows many vertical stripes going down her body at times, then at other they will disappear or be a faded grey. What is this? I am afraid I don't have any more pics but do you suggest another 2 rams or just leave my tank how it is?

This is exactly what my female does, so it is probably a female.

As far as more rams, I have no clue, cause I just asked same question about my 37 gallon, so maybe someone can help both of us out on this.

I hope so. :p I am planning on moving out in about a year or two so I don't want to upgrade to a large tank until I move out. Then I will probably get a nice 100-150 gallon tank and set it up with maybe an oscar or two? Then some other various cichlids I guess. Then I will upgrade my 29 gallon to a 50 and then just convert the fish to there.

Then my boyfriend wants like a 100 gallon salwater. :dunno: I don't know much about saltwater, but I suppose we could try it. I just don't want to end up buying a 50$ fish and see it floating at the top the next morning because we didn't set the tank up right.

Actually, it looks to me like they might both be males. The females have a pinkish tinge to their stomach. If you look at the pelvic fins on both of your fish, they seem to be of the same proportion on both fish. Males have larger pelvic fins than females. Another indicator would be the back of the dorsal fin. On your larger fish, see how it rises and ends in a point? On a female, it would be shorter and rounded. It's hard to tell on your smaller fish b/c it's a bit nibbled on. The front spikes on the dorsal fin could just not have grown yet - it happens as the fish grow.

If i do take a quick look I say 2 males, but when i look closer the top fish looks like their could be a slight pinkess to the underside, but it could just be the pic. I'm undecided, but the 2nd fish is definitely male(males will chase female away too).
I wouldn't buy any more rams until you know the sexes, you may accidentally add more males and have awhole bunch of males beating up each other OR you may get another pair and they will fight with each other for territory(which is fine if you have a large tank). There will always be a dominant couple.

I agree that they are probably 2 males. I know I shouldn't have trusted the guy at the LPS to get me a male and female. Oh well, they don't show much aggression and they seem to be very fond of each other. :D
