I have a group of 7 discus at the moment. 2 are 2" body the others are 3.5"-4". The two largest are showing 7 vertical bars quite a lot sometimes very dark for a few minutes then a lighter shade.
My question is, is this a sign of stress or are they close to breeding or any other possibility?
they do swim together quite a lot and there has been no fighting just bright colouration! Thank you for your time.

there stress strips they get them now and then normaly mine do it when there in a bad mood with me about somthing. nothing to worrie about i dont think unless there like black and showin all the time!

They show every so often they are gone at the moment but an hour ago they were jet black! The 2 in question are staying at one end of the tank together. I fed 20 mins ago and were feeding fine! I was hoping it was something to do with breeding! lol high hopes!

mine were 5in 18months old when they first spawned now they have spawned 3 time with out been able to get them to free swiming stage. when mine r about to spawn they move away from the group and shake there fins at each othere. but the bars r down to stress but some never get the bars were some will show there bars all the time for no reason. if young give it time u will get a pair and normaly abit for fighting lol

As stated by JA5ON, don't worry about it. As long as they are not showing all the time this is normal. I'll have my fingers crossed for a pair for you!

pigeon blood, red marlborough, purple emperor?, blue colbalt, Stendker Red Turq, and a beige coloured one I dont know what its called though!
