Hey guys, I was wondering if there are any red plants that require relatively low light compared to other red plants. I have a small 18Watt Power Compact fixture that fits perfectly on top of the tank. I got some free java moss from my cousin a while ago and it has grown really well ever since but my last red plant that i got from my LFS died off.

My tank has NO CO2 so i would like a really low demanding red plant. Also, im planning to keep 1 or 2 galaxy rasboras in the tank, is that okay? I mostly do reef tanks so im pretty clueless about planted tanks and such.

My tank:

If im doing something wrong, please let me know!!

Thanks alot

I have ludwigia natans in a 10g with a 15 watt light. The undersides of the leaf get very bright pink/red, and the tops get a sort of red wash of color. I don't think it would have any problem with light in your tank, but it grows very fast and you would have to stay on trimming it. A red or bronze cryptocoryne wendtii might be alright. But they like to melt after you take them home, which is frustrating. They slowly come back after a month or two.

Just some ideas.

thx katty, i might try some of those red ludwiga natans. 4 galaxy rasboras isnt going to fit in my 2.5G i suppose  . are there any other tiny fish out there thats going to fit in this tank?

thanks

On second thoughts, I'm not sure of a fish that would be suitable for that size tank. Of course 1-2 Galaxy Rasboras would fit, they wouldn't be too happy.

Shrimps and snails however could be good livestock.

I've kept some of the smaller micro rasboras species, Boraras brigittae, merah, and uropthalmoides in tanks as small as 2.5g. I've also kept pygmy corydoras. Granted, this was a densly planted tank with 10x turnover on the filtration, and I have 20 years of fish keeping under my belt. For those with less experience, shrimp are a better option and honestly, just as interesting and colorful. You could always go with the betta. 2.5g, contrary to the size tanks sometimes mentioned in the betta section, especially planted and with filtration, is a great tank size for a betta.

As for red plants, Alternantera reineckii will do alright at lower light levels. At least it did well for me.
