I lost Googie (DT cambodian betta) sometime last week. I could stand to look at his spacious setup because it looks so empty without him. I rearranged the tank with the following:

Substrate: sand
Hard decor: 2 pieces of boiled bogwood (slopes from upper left to lower right)
Flora & Fauna: 4 small java fern
Inhabitants: 1 adult bumblebee goby, 3 red cherry shrimp

Am I overstocked? I don't know the shrimp-to-tank ratio, but these guys sure love to eat up the hair algae the grows on my fern.

Odd. The store I brought him from kept him in with glo-lites. Those tetra aren't brackish, are they? And I've been reading so many excerpts where these gobies were kept in freshwater all the way to a marine setting. I've been reading about them on the net and I am getting all different kinds of info, much of it contradictory. But still, it only grows to 1 inch. I will keep you updated on the goby.

They will only eat live food.

You'd be better of with a betta + shrimp
I had a betta with a few ghost shrimp before, but that was over in a couple of days. :X  -_- The red cherry shrimps are the same length as the goby. I feed the goby live brine shrimp.
