2.5 Gallon Tank

A couple male guppies, a betta, shrimp (could get a pretty impressive number of cherry shrimp or other dwarf shrimp in there).

A planted nano tank with a bunch of shrimp or a betta in it. You could go for a strong-light, CO2-injected setup yet keep the cost low due to the small size of the tank, or keep it simple and still have a nice tank.

Check out this thread for an example (he rescaped the tank so the first and last pages of the thread are effectively two different scapes):

I have a 2.5 sitting around somewhere, been thinking about whether it would make an ok QT tank since I never buy very many fish at once...

I know many keep bettas in 2.5 gals but personally if it was me I wouldn't even attempt it. Not enough room IMO. Shrimp may be ok though. A pair of ghost shrimp or some Amanos would look really nice. And since shrimp love mosses you could do a lovely moss setup for them.
