Jewel 180 needs its 1st filter change. I've heard it's good to build up helpful bacteria in the filter, so which 'pads' do I change? All or some?

none of them, just rinse them out gently in used tank water and put it all back together. TBH you shouldn't need to touch the insides of a new filter for a good 3 months or so after its been set up.

Eventually you'll need to change the floss (fine white fluffy pad) when it starts falling to bits, but again that'll take a good while.

We live in a consumer world, any advice that the companies give you along the lines of 'change filter media every 6 months' should be thoroughly ignored on all levels..as lufbramatt mentioned above, only change your media when it is literally falling to pieces in your hand, and then it should be a 'staggered' change-over, IE; keeping some of the old stuff back to colonise your new media.

Terry.
