Courtesy of speeding orange I will be getting a 16l tank some time soon.

My first idea is to scape it nicely and have a few plants. For the livestock I'm thinking some type of shrimp (any suggestions) and a small group of rasboras. Is the tank big enough for my plans?

What would you do with this sized tank?

Cheers

I personally would only keep shrimp in there; it really is very small. You might get away with 5 dwarf rasboras, but certainly nothing more...

Ok mate. I'll probably just go for shrimp then.

Any suggestions as to what type and how many? I know there's some that won't breed, which is something I'm not interested in

Cheers

I don't know very much about shrimp tbh! The two most common types are Cherry shrimp which will breed in freshwater and Amano shrimp which are bigger and need salt or brackish water to breed. Either would be ok in your tank.

You should be ok with 10 or 12 shrimp in a tank of that size.

Thanks for the help mate.

I'll have a proper search when I get home. Until then can anyone else shed some light?

Cheers

you MIGHT be able to get a couple of endler guppies in there? Although i think 16l might be pushing it for them, and i don't know how many they need to be. LFSs always seem to sell them by the pair.

Cherry shrimp would be really nice in there though, although make sure it's completely cycled/ got mature media from another tank because they generally don't do well in tanks "younger" than 3 months or so. They'll breed too if they're happy enough.

Amano shrimp can grow a bit bigger and won't breed (as said above), so it's up to you!

I don't think I'll risk it with any fish then. The shrimp will do me fine. The tanks going to be about the scaping rather then live stock anyway.

I will start a journal once the tank comes but I don't know which category I would put it in

Thanks for your help

just to give you another option - - 16 liters is a little over 4 gallons....(I'm in the US and think in gallons haha)....you could have a pair of African Dwarf Frogs if you want something a little more eye catching than shrimp

Hmmm that is something to think about. I'm on my phone so can't search properly, so I'll ask you :) Is 16l a minimum size or is it plenty of room? Will they munch on any plants I decide to put in? Any chance of breeding?

Cheers

it is plenty of room in a tank dedicated to them...and I would only stock two.

ADF tadpoles are very difficult to raise and would need a tank dedicated to the breeding - - the eggs would have best chance of survival if they are laid and allowed to hatch in one tank dedicated to them, with the parents removed after breeding - - parents will eat the eggs, tadpoles, and juvenile frogs.

chances are that you will see amplexus (mating embrace) but it will not result in eggs with out the right conditions.

they do make great little pets, and once you get back to a computer check out a link in my signature to learn more about them and their care :good:

if you have any specific questions I would be more than happy to answer them for you
