Okie dokie, last week I finally re-scaped my 15gallon, 1WGP tank. Previously it felt constantly overgrown, and the fish got a big cramped. I removed the resin tree roots, added some well soaked mopani wood (talk about tannin release when soaking!), removed loads of the old plants and added some new ones (courtesy of Greenline, these guys really do excellent aquarium plants!). Much of the planting is to benefit what I feel the different fish prefer, but it is also aimed at a more controllable growth of the plants: plants that send out runners can go nuts! So, here is the current setup:

My current thoughts are:

1) I want to move all the cabomba behind the mopani, to the right of the spike in the wood, taking out the rotala macranda
2) I'm thinking a nice sized java fern (or similar) may look really good to the far left corner
3) Not sure on the bacopa to the right of the tank, the colour is a bit light for that location I feel
4) I like, but am not overly sure, on the monosolenium tenerus (spelling)

I am looking to replace the naff Tetra CO2 system with the Nutrafin kit (to get a more balanced CO2 level), I also have some thoughts on modding the hood to take two light tubes, giving me 2WPG: rather than use a method I've seen online which puts a second tube right at the front of the hood I am debating a Dremel (et-al) to remove all the existing Juwel lighting gear, and putting in two new tube mounts and reflectors, to give a more even lighting spread: plants grow towards the front too much already and adding a second tube at the front won't make it any better. I would like to get the plants growing upwards. I reckon I can do this without much hassle.

Oh, and my anubias looks like it is going to flower! :)

Ta :)

The interesting thing is that it does seem to have had the desired positive effect on fish behaviour. My shy tetra now swim out much much more and the danio are enjoying the open swimming area. The cory appear to be appreciating much more open/accessible substrate too.

It was a scary process, pretty much like starting again, waiting for plants to grow in etc!

A bit of a change to the planting scheme, whilst cabomba may not be the best long term choice for me, I quite like it and it always grows well for me. I wanted to reduce the number of different plants used in the tank, I am going for the 'less is more' idea at the moment:

Well, things are not doing too badly. I am now running:

54 Litre/14.25 US Gallons
JBL AquaBasis Plus below normal gravel (yak!)
~2.5wpg via Interpet Power Compact T5 36w with reflector
DIY CO2 with two Nutrafin cannisters + ceramic diffuser
Lights currently on 7 hours per day

First batch of cabomba was repaced with some Tropica rotala sp. najenshan.

Tomorrow is D-Day. I am starting EI after months of talking about it! Powders purchased via AquaEssentials, tomorrow sees my first 50% water change and first EI dose, schedule as follows (figures taken from JamesC's website):

Monday
50% water change
10ml Potassium Nitrate (KNO3)
5ml Potassium Phosphate (KH2PO4)

Tuesday
2ml Traces

Wednesday
10ml Potassium Nitrate (KNO3)
5ml Potassium Phosphate (KH2PO4)
Change CO2 cannister 1

Thursday
2ml Traces

Friday
10ml Potassium Nitrate (KNO3)
5ml Potassium Phosphate (KH2PO4)

Saturday
2ml Traces

Sunday Rest day
Change CO2 cannister 2

I am not initially going to use Potassium Sulphate, I will see how things go. I am curious on the lighting period I am currently running. I am hoping to re-try upping it gradually towards 10hours per day, but at the moment algae (mainly staghorn) really appreciates the 10hour period and starts to appear everywhere. Hopefully the now stable CO2 and soon-to-be started EI will reduce the likelihood of this in the future.
