.

At certain times of the year they apparently live in puddles in watering holes made by animal feet, so maybe to change puddles they jump from one to the next??? They see tanks with no lids on as a puddle... And get grass is greener syndrome, hey we've all had it!!!

I think it could also be stress-related, but I voted water quality.

Needed a "None of the Above" option.

Personally I think it is a survival strategy from dry seasons when their rice paddies dry up and they're left with only puddles.

The one time my boy jumped i think was because he wanted to do more then flare at his neighbour, who was a 1 inch platty, luckly for the platty, who somehow ended up the the bettas division, the jumping betta decided he was more interested in flaring at the next fish along who was a betta.

my betta only jumps when i put him in a plastic cup for water changes. He hates that :X . I make sure the water is low enough that he can make it over the top. But i've never seen him jump in his tank though.

I voted for food. But the only two times I've had bettas jump was when i was doing water changes and I put them in their cups and before I could get a lid on it, they jumped. One landed in the sink (cuz I was in the bathroom) and I got him out and back into the water very quickly. And the other jumped from the cup back into his tank. I have him in a 4 or 5 inch deep rubbermaid thing and so the cup was about the same height and he just jumped right back into his tank. :hyper: :good:

my best male loves jumping.i put a bloodworm on my finger and hold it atleast 1cm above the water.he lets his bum sink while he lines it up then BAM!.he seems to really enjoy it,plus its good exercise and i think it makes him feel like he's a hunter.

  going to try that with my 2 old boys who poke their heads right out for bloodworms! :shout:

I've been lucky so far the betta's haven't jumped but my killi's have ( I lost a prize breeding male cause I left the lid off  ).

How high/far can they jump? I'd hate to think of my betta jumping out of the aquarium while Im doing water changes.

Knowing my luck, he'd jump down the back of the cabinet where I cant save him.

Does anybody have a rough guide to the abilities?

Hmm... I think they jump for lotsa reasons.

My males in divided tanks, if I forget to cover them, will jump to beat each other up. I'm much more vigilant about keeping the covers on their condos while I am cleaning the tanks. :)

The girls jump for food. They are such voracious eaters! As soon as I open the lid of their aquarium, they all collect in the upper right corner where I always sprinkle their food, and they start leaping! I've had one in particular leap out and land on the carpet a few times. She gave me a good scare!

I recently lost a gorgeous giant plakat, Fezzick :-( ... He was in a spawning tank for a two-week conditioning. I came home on my three-hour lunch break (I work a split shift) and started cleaning his tank, as I was going to put his sis Fiona in with him the next day. I took Fezzick and another male (same situation) and put them in quart-sized tupperware bowls and covered them up with a heavy piece of ceramic tile. The tile wasn't big enough to completely cover the bowls... there was maybe a half inch gap on either side. Then next thing I know, it's time to go back to work so I decided to leave them in their bowls until I could get home and finish cleaning.

I have no clue how Fezzick did it, but he jumped out and I came home to a crispy plakat. I was sooooo upset I cried!!!

Luckily my friend Linda Olson has another one just like him for me, so Fiona won't die a lonely old maid.
