I have no clue. I have never thought about this before. Good question! Let's see who answers. I would think that it wouldn't effect things too much since the snails are small and there aren't that many of them.

I've found the shells of mine that have died on the gravel itself. They're hard to kill anyways, so I don't think it's a very big problem, unless you have an amazingly huge number of them... Also depends on the buffering capacity or kH of your water. This refers to "the ability to absorb and neutralize added acid without major changes to pH". http://www.drhelm.com/aquarium/chemistry.html

Mine is 3dH, and that is considered low, but I'm not worries about the shells affecting mypH since I've seen so few of them. Back to my point that it wouldn't really be a problem, IMO, unless you had a lot of them.

thought this was funny that you talked about this, out of nowhere the other day, i found about 3/4" light brown shell out of nowhere in my tank. There are no visiable snails otherwise. Dont know where it came from.

I would say probably not. If the snails do die, then for starters the shells probably wont dissovle back into the tank anyway. If they did then the production and growth of baby snails would probably just use up the excess anyway.

I would have thought it would take millions to get a detectable difference in the pH. Perhaps when you have lots of empty shells, you could put some in a pot and see what happens? Then let us know? :p

Sam: I'm seeing a trend here - you're making me do these experiments! First, letting the weird stringy-vine thing with seeds grow and see what it looks like..., and now this!!! But naw, I changed my mind (yet again) about putting the snails in the main tank and placed them in my nano-nano cube instead (as originally planned). If it does somehow affect PH, it would be in the cube and not in the main tank.

p.s. The seeds in the weird vine thing started to produce roots. No signs of leaves yet.

Haha it saves me the effort of doing it! :p Let me know what happens with the vine thing, hope it turns out to be something cool!
