I know this has been done many times, which makes it quite difficult to choose.

I got my tank four days ago and have started my fishless cycle, with the ammonia level dropping already which i thaught it might take a bit longer to start doing.

What fish do you all think i should go for? I think that i want to go for small and many (max 4") but i am struggling to get an idea of a decent community tank. any advice will be much appreciated.

thanks :good:

Do you like small shoaling fish or medium sized fish that aren't shoalers?

I had discussed this with someone on here about an hour ago, but i like the idea of a shoal of penguin tetras and Cardinal tetras.
makes a bit of a contrast

Ok so I'd suggest a group of 15-20 tetras (what type do you like?) a group of maybe 10-12 corys if you have sand, and a few top dwellers maybe gouramis, and a bn or other small pleco. :good:

what would you suggest instead of the corys as i have gravel? i like a few different types of tetra, can you mix them?

You can but you'd need at least 6 of each and I personally prefer one big shoal. Because each individual group will then shoal together. Instead of cories I'd do hmm gravel kind of knocks out alot of bottom dwellers because the teyras will be your mid and the gouramis or hatchetfish your top but I'm not sure on s bottom dweller. The bristlenose or other small plec will go everywhere. Hmm is there any bottom dwellers you like in particular?

Yeah, mixing tetras is no problem with the smaller ones, they won't necessarily shoal together but they aren't aggressive, as for something bottom dwelling, 1 or 2 bristlenose catfishes should do well in a fairly well planted tank :)

I would like to know what filter you have though as well because that could also be a factor in what fish you can get.

Ok so it's 155 gph in a 28ish gallon tank so about a 5 time turnover per hour. That's ok but I wouldn't stick to bn in there I'd do
18-24 tetras (all one type or 6-12 of each type)
1 bristlenose pleco or similar sized pleco
1 male 2 female dwarf gourami or pearl gourami OR 3-4 hatchetfish and I think you'd be maxed. :good:

Oto's do better in groups & can be quite fragile in a new tank.
If you really want them, best to wait until your tank's more mature
