i want to make my 100L tank into a tetra setup. what is the maximun amount of neon tetras i can keep in the tank? thanks tom

100l is about 20ish gallons? In which case 20 inches of fish, you can normally follow the 1 inch of fish per gallon with smaller tropicals but forget it when keeping cichlids, large fish.

So the inch of fish is measured without the tail, which makes adult neons approx half and inch.

= 40 tetras.

Just tweak this amount when you definately know how many gallons your tank is.

I've always wanted to do a pure neon/cardinal/simulans tank, but always end up changing my mind. Just make sure you buy the best neons you can as unhealthy stock could quickly devastate a setup like this.

It would also be best if you had some bottom dwellers (like the corydoras suggested or maybe a bristlenose), so you can add them after the tanks cycled and use them to mature the tank for 3-6 months before adding the neons.

Neons. They cost less.

Sounds cruel but when there is no biological advantage (ie, stuff being less likely to die) to adding either then you look at price.

my tank works out at 21 gallons

100 litres ~= 25 US gallons, US gallons are the units used for the inch per gallon rule.

A shoal of 20 or so harlequins would look really nice and plant the tank up
