I just hope I was distracted by the rain and the paint is on the outside of the aquarium. I appreciate your advice tolak i have an idea. I think I will try to use the paint stripper and attempt to keep it off of the seals. I don't mind blue seals too much anyway. do you think this would lessen the risk any? Or am I really just swatting at flies?

It will definitely lessen it. Look at how much less area is painted. I would think with that little bit of paint, any toxic crap that may leach out would be taken care of with water changes.

hmm you bring up an interesting point. would the paint be more toxic than the paint stripper. I hadn't thought of that. I believe I will use the stripper on the seals and I may remove the seals completely and replace them if I can get just a little more info about how to do it. One of your links talks about it I think.

I checked it out (GARF) but it talked about making one. If i remove the seals from the inside will the tank come apart? or is it sealed were the glass contacts?

http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?showtopic=42516 goes through the resealing thing. If the seals look good after cleaning, I would leave them. If it looks like the edges are coming off, strip the old silicone off with a single edge razor blade. A pair of vise grips helps hold the blade to get in tight corners. It also keeps it away from your fingers a little more if you slip. There is a seal between the edges of the glass, I would tape the corners together anyway just to be safe. It's a pretty thin seal between the pieces of glass.

GE Silicone I is the cheapest sealant for tanks. All-Glass uses it to seal their tanks, It's what is in the tubes of All-Glass sealant. Other silicones not specifically made for aquariums may have anti-fungals in them. They are toxic to fish.

thanks i'll take a look at that link now. I'll probably reseal the thing because it has been outside exposed to the weather for three weeks, and i'm not sure what impact his has had on the seals.

edit: will the vinegar discussed in the thread damage the seal between the glass. Idon't think it would but I REALLY don't want 100 gallons of water in my floor.

just FYI, i know that when i painted the back of my tanks i used some kind of latex based paint that my girlfriend had...using a metal paint scraper it comes off no problem without usin any cleaning solutions... basically you just start a section with the scraper and then you can peel it away with your fingers...for tougher paint jobs, i've still only ever used the scraper with no problems...

as for a stand, i would use cinder blocks, plywood, and some kind of fabric draped over it

thanks guys. I'm gonna go get it a little later today. Any tips on transporting it or questions I should ask before I buy it?

lots of blankets and if you have tie down straps, put one on each side of the tank and tighten so it is impossible for it to move....

just make sure the aquarium was only used for fish and have it in writing (if possible) that if for some reason it does leak/crack/whatever within a reasonable amount of time (within the week for instance) they will work it out with you

thanks. That's a good idea. I'm not sure that the guy will go for it though. I think that if it leaks I'll just reseal it, but if it cracks i'm out 60 bucks. I'll ask anyway though.

no go on the 100 gallon. The tank had an impact mark on the top. The plastic frame was broken away and the glass was cracked a bit. I don't trust it enough to take it away for free. So I'll keep looking

If the plastic frame is broken, tank is worthless, unless you can find a replacement. Those frames play a major role in holding tank toghether. I had the brace break on a 55, I never knew glass could bend that much!!!!

it was hard passing it up. i didn't even think about the plastic being broken really. I just figured that if something hit it hard enough to break the plastic and chip the glass then it must have done some real damage. I've seen windshileds crack and spread and I can imagine what it would do with900 lbs behind it. Didn't want water all over my house. :byebye:
