10 Gallons

Pygmy corys like to be in large groups, more like 12. Theyre very active and personally I like to see them in a tank larger than 10 gallons.

Otos need a really well established tank, lots of plants, green algae, blanched zucchini and other veggies, and pristine water. As you haven't even got the 10 gall yet, I think we can say its not well established! I don't just mean the filter here, the whole tank develops a biofilm and just an 'aged' quality to it that the otos can graze on. Theyre so picky and can die for no obvious reason. I really don't think they're suitable for your tank at this stage, perhaps six months down the line. Also I'm sticking to the original brief here by saying they are not colourful and you often don't see much of them.

Neons I would avoid, again because they like to be in large groups (we all say a minimum of 6, but in reality that's still nothing compared to how they normally live). IMO tetras should be 12+. I have also had a betta shredded by living with fin-nipping neon tetras. Up to you of course.

Chilli rasboras might work, you could probably add a more like 9 as they're tiny. Bit boring though.

I think you'd be better off with a fish that likes company of its own kind but is not technically a schooler, that way you don't have to worry about numbers as much. Endlers have more personality than tetras and rasboras and are not going to be slinking away at the back because they're in a tiny group. They are colourful and active and should cause no problems with your female bettas.

But, it's your tank, in reality you can add what you like :)

If I do choose to do oto's, I'd have no problems waiting until the tank was well established. How long would you say to wait? I'm thinking like at least 6 months after cycling is complete??

I do quite like rasboras, and endlers are nice too! Are there any other possibles??

You could try otos if you like, yeah in anout six months or so. Llike I say, they can be a bit tricky but only if you don't make the extra effort for them ie the veg, growing algae on rocks outside, etc. but they are cute and I wouldn't be without mine! I would add three at first, they do like to be in bigger groups but 10 galls is quite small and food will obviously need to go further with more.

Endlers or micro rasboras will be a good choice for now, let us know what you go for when you upgrade.

Do you think it would be possible to have otos and one of these options:
a - 6 Galaxy Rasboras
b - 6 Rasbora Brigittea
c - 6 Cardinal Tetras
d - 5 male Endlers

Would that be a possibility?? Or would I be overstocked?

Pushing it really. Excuse for a bigger tank? ;)

xD I already had to beg for this one! She wanted me to put the 3 females in a 5 gallon! I convinced her this would let her have the small community she wanted, instead of my divided males! I really want some otos... but I only have the tank i'm getting, and my divided 10 gallon male tank.. And mom has to have a small colorful schooling fish! If i can't though, I can't...

Well it's not like you can add them yet so there's no need to decide right now! You might not feel the need to add them in a few months after all and be happy with the fish you have.

That's very true, I've heard about growing algae on rocks for them to eat, and I'm curious as to how you do that? I want to try it for my snails

The theory is you stick large smooth pebbles in a container of water and leave it in a sunny spot outside. The algae grows on the rocks and you can keep adding some to the tank and swapping them over once they're clean.

It works well for a lot of people. I've had little luck, but then again we don't get much sun where I am!
