Currently have a 10 Gallon tank that will get planted within a month or two.

I'm currently looking for a stocking plan down the line. I currently have 1 Betta, 3 Aeneus Cory, 2 Small Platys, One Male Guppy, One Female Guppy. This tank was inherited so the fish came with the tank. I was thinking I might trade in the current Corys and buy some Pygmy Cory if I can find them.

My plan is to keep One Male Betta, 3-4 Corys, a small group of schooling fish, and an Oto. Does this plan look good and what schooling fish can I add? I wanted at least 5. Neon Tetra's? Lemon Tetra's? Cloud Minnows? I need to make sure they won't nip my Betta. He's the centerpiece. :)

Do Shrimp contribute to the Bio-Load? I was thinking of maybe adding an Amano shrimp or two down the line.

What are your thoughts?

~ Well depending on what type of schooling fish you get you can not most likely get five, but that depends on the size and you do not want to get 5 livebearers becuase i had 5 platties and they bred like crazy!

so you might be able to get 3-5 neon tetras becuase corys i think need at least 75 gallons but i am not sure!

Thanks!

you know i think it was the clown loach!

sorry about that!

my mistake!

Your taking a risk if you keep the betta with other fish, some will get along with other fish, some will be too "wimpy" and get picked on by the other fish (ecspecaily tetras) and some will attack/eat other fish...so try it and if it doesn't work have a spare tank ready.

I would keep the tetras in a group of no less then 6, the more there are the safer they'll feel, and hopefully the less likely they will pick on the betta. Stick with smaller tetras though.

Ottos can be very sensitive to water quality and are known to die out of the blue, I would wait until your tank is well established (atleast 6 months) and would only add them if you have lots of algea for them to feed on. Go with 2-3 though as they are suppost to do better in groups.

If you want cories, go with the pygmy cories. Other cories grow 2-3" usually so would really limit your stocking. IF you do stick with the larger cories I would keep just them (no less then 3) and the betta, if you add the tetras it will probably end up being too crowded.

Shrimp add barely anything to your bioload so you can add as much of those as you want (be reasonable though! LoL) as long as they are compatible with the other fish.

could be. clown loaches do get massive =) no problem we all make mistakes.

This forum should really have Cookie Cutter setups for the most popular tank sizes. This would help a lot of people looking for ideas. Something similar to what is on the Cichlid Forum.

Torrean those linked helped a lot. I'm going to try to get 4-5 Endlers, and 4 pygmy cories. I just need to find a store that stocks these species.

just because a species is not in stock does NOT mean the store can not get them upon request. Ask if you can special order a species.

Do Petsmart/PetCo do special orders?

They are the only stores that sell fish that I know in the Miami area that are close by.

Chain stores are less likely to special order you in stuff, but you could always ask?

Also, are you still planning on having the betta in there? If so, be very carefull with him and the endlers, he'll most likey go after them.

hey since you liked those links so much you should post in the pin me pin me thread and say so or PM a mod and tell them, atleast send a thank you PM to sylvia. I think the first one should be pinned. I hate searching through that thread everytime this question comes up.

Yeah, Betta stays. I don't want to have a seperate tank for him. So I'll be looking for something that can coexist with him. Currently there is a male guppy in there and we is doing well.

I'm using this 10 gallon tank as a trial tank until the summer. If I'm still loving this (and so far it looks like it won't end) I'll know I'm hooked for life and will be looking at a 75 gallon to place in my room. When I was younger I had a few tanks but bored of them easy. This was mostly due to it not really being mine. Regardless, I'm 21 now with a good job. So I'm disciplining myself with this tank for a few months before I spoil myself with the 75. When that time comes it'll be looking into probably a Cichlid tank as keeping up with CO2 and ferts isn't isn't something I'll be looking foward to.

I'm really enjoying this hobby more than ever before. Really soothing when coupled with classical music or some jazz. Add this with you never really stop learning new things and it's consuming my spare time. It's great.

Oh man long post sorry, lol.

I also have a 10gal UK tank and had similar discussions and thoughts about what to stock. Any liverbearers were a bit of a no no for me as they are often difficult to sex and breed like rabbits, easily over running a small tank. I have also had trouble in the UK finding anywhere that stocks Endlers as I was interesting in getting them as well. I have since found that they don't school though which is something I wanted out of my fish. Ive decided to go for around 6 Harlequin Raboras (which do school) and 4 pygmy cories (which also school). I'm going to try and get Corydoras pygmaeus which is apparantly the smallest Pygmy Cory (reaches about 1") but there are 2 other species which get slightly bigger. C. hastatus 1" - 2" & C. habrosus around 2".

Not sure if that helps you out but hey

ps (Not that you're probably interested but my nitrite finally went today on my first fishless cycle!!! HOOORAY!! Went from 2ppm to Zero in 12 hours after being stuck at 2ppm for almost 2 weeks. Incredibly frustrating whilst you're waiting but very satisfying now I know I can get my fish at the weekend).
