search the betta forum for tank mates. there is a lot of info out there. swordtails are a bad idea from what i have read.
i have experience with keeping ottos and highly recommend them. they aren't flashy and can't nip fins (sucker fish). plus, they are fast as hell and my betta gave up chasing them in the first couple of hours.
given that, i have a betta that i would never consider housing with other fish. he wants to shred anything that moves. so it really depends on the temperament.
