Hi, i have my betta with sone white cloud mountain minnows, he is a right fistey fish and nipped the hell outa anything that went near him, i set up a new tank then added the mountain minnows.....3 then 3 over a month then finnaly agged Rambo lol he desrves that name btw! they all get along fine as long as rambo gets his dinner first! as he can be a miserable wee swine!

Other peeps may have better suggestions, i am new to the hobby and i found this worked for me

i have 3 skirt tail tetras i could easily part with. would they be okay with him? or would he hurt them because the little one is kind of cute.

I agree, White Cloud Mountain Minnows are your best bet. I would get 4 or 5 and add those. I have only ever used them as betta tankmates, never had problems. Though I have not had a tankmate for any bettas in probably over a year now.

Hi

A good idea would be to remove your betta from the tank, when you get your new fishies home, and rearrange the decor a bit. Release the new ones and then put your betta back in.

This sort of changes his terrirtory and may keep his mind off the newbies :good:

Corys and Ottos are always a good bet. Mountain Minnows are good too along with Danios and Rasboras from what I understand. Also, you could always divide the tank once or even twice and get another betta or two. :hey: There's a ton of these threads on here, so look around. I'm sure you'll get some ideas. :good:

I HEARD that platys work well.

HEARD...
im trying the platys soon as my tank finshes cycling

I wouldn't go for putting him in with the skirttails, anything that catches a betta eye will attact him and remind him to protect his plot, fish with little fins and a small size i think are best as the betta doesn't see them as competition, i have some skirt tails and i wouldn't risk them with rambo(the mad betta) This does also depend on the nature of the betta, he might not care about any other fish but you won't know til you try it!

the little one is about the size of a dime so i'll take your advice and keep them in my tank. what about swordtails?

Hi dn, well i really couldn't tell you about swordtails, i have never tried it personally, i am sure someone else on the forum would let you know, as i said before i am fairly new to the hobby and came by my betta thru completely wrong advice from a lfs, he killed a fantail within 2 days of being in with him, then the betta ended up in a 20 litre quarintine tank while i prepared the 10 gallon, he flares at everything in sight, even his own reflection in the glass!lol, so i set up the 10 gallon as i said with wcmm in it and left the quarentne tank full until i was sure they were going to get on as i was not allowing him to kill anything else! but the fact that he killed a fantail was an indicator to me that rambo was worth the watching, the ironic thing is that he loves people, he will take food from your hand and comes straight over whenever i go over for a look at him, so appart from the housing difficulty i would say a betta is a real worth while fish to keep and they are lovely looking and very colourful, rambo is about a year or so old and the draw back i think is the life span in captivity, i believe it is about 2 years although i have read of people having them for 6 or more, however once housed sufficently a betta is a great little fish to have, well i would say anyway!!

i haven't had a betta in a long time and the last one i had actually flared up at my finger when i would point at him. always made me laugh. thanks for the advice.

Um...I would stay away from White Cloud Mountain minnows. As I understand it they are coldwater fish while bettas are warm water fish. I don't know the minnows heat tolerance though.

WCMM are fine in warmer water. I have had a shoal in my 30g for nearly 2 years and they are fine
