Hi! Personally when I buy a betta I go to That Fish Place That Pet Place in lancaster pennsylvania (home of the amish) their bettas are usually pretty nice and non diseased. Other places that sell decent bettas are, lfs that are not mass chains and ebay sellers.

I read all I could find on the Amish when we moved to Pennsylvania. Even subscribed to their newspaper. Fascinating culture.
They are interesting people, but by no means kind. As someone who has had the misfortune of living in pa for several years ( ohio is superior) at this point and who went to school in amish country I can say they do not value their animals, and they regularly abuse their horses, they also run puppy mills. I've seen carts loaded with amish people being pulled by one small horse. I've seen the dogs they breed, its so incredibly sad. As a christian it apalls me that other christians think its permisable to treat gods creatures this way and to abuse a dumb animal. But yeah they are definitly interesting people

I am aware & agree, however, one can never paint any culture with such a broad brush. Kindness & compassion are found cross culturally.

Also keep in mind there are numerous Amish sects. Some may look like your next door neighbor. The more orthodox may look like they belong on a set for a 18th century movie.

I get you! I'm just specificially reffering to the group living in pennsylvania and the ones who live in ohio and my experience living in ohio and pa for 16 years. BTW ohio is heaven, pennsylvania is the 5th circle of hell

are you referring to your new betta? I just a took a look. My betta is sleeping on the bottom near the heater. I am sure he will start swimming around in a few hours when the sun rises.

My betta also sleeps on the substrate or on top of the heater. I think it's quite common, I wouldn't worry too much about it.
