OK, I am after a bit more advice as I am confused by all the conflicting information online. I apologize in advance if this gets a bit wordy and I tell you stuff about the tank that you dont need to know but I want to solve this once and for all.
I have had my tank planted for around 6 months...
Thanks for the replies.
After your comment of the seals having s bad rep on the APS filters I am going to pop to maidenhead to take a look at the aquamanta units. Tempted to go for a Ex300 just in case i decide to get a bigger tank in the future, do they have an adjustable flow like my internal...
I am fed up with having a big internal filter in my 100L tank so I am looking for an external canister filter but don't want to spend a fortune on it. I did look at getting one second hand but decided that I don't want to use old filter media so I may as well look at getting a new one instead.

I have not kept this up to date but here is a (bad) pic of how it looks in there now. Plants have really grown out and a fair few more have been added including floating plants. I have added DIY Co2, changed the lighting added a black backing. A few fish have been added too (cherry barbs, dwarf...
I managed to get to my LFS yesterday and buy some taller wood that I liked. Here are a few pics of it in the tank, I think it makes the tank look much better.
It isnt staying in the tank yet because I want it to soak for a while first but I placed it in there to make sure it fitted. I apologise...
I have had DIY Co2 running for about a month now and as KirkyArcher said once you start you will not want to go back. I have a 100L tank and I run my Co2 24/7 without an air stone and have had no problems so far.
You will want surface agitation in some way though, doesn't need to be extreme...
I think it looks better now that you have moved around. Not sure about the stones on the right hand side though, looks cluttered but that could be just me. As techen said I would wait a bit and let things grow out to see if you like it.
I agree with the filter being hidden a bit more, for whatever reason the plant (hygrophila?) on the left hand side hasn't grown as quick as the stuff in the centre even though it was all bought at the same time. Keep looking at external filters for that exact reason. I really like the idea of...
So I am 'fairly' happy with my tank but I don't know what to do with it next. I feels like something is missing, maybe more/taller wood? What do you all think?
Thanks. I am still amazed that the cherry barb is still with us. He had a deformed fin from the day he got home and has never grown any bigger since.
The pictures were taken on a Canon 1100D. Cant decide which of the gourami's I should enter into 'Fish of the month'.
Could you give me your verdict on this:

Although the lights on your link look great they are quite expensive! My tank is 80cm wide.
