Is it crucial? Or does it just help them be happy?

I have a otto cat in my 5 gallon and he is happy. I just keep the algae at a moderate amount and he is healthy and has been in there for months now.

There is no live plants except for the one in the first picture which does have some on it. I just added another plant though (sword) as you know from my other post.
