Where I live, I'm not really exposed to that much of a variety and can only periodically experiment on what's available at our pet stores. Most of my breeding was done in the early 1970's and 80's living in the bigger centres (Welkom in the Orange Free State) I've since moved around 3 times to what could be more accurately described as villages and on and off, I had to abandon my hobby completely due to lack of resources. I am now living in Amandelbult in the Limpopo province which is also small, but at least a little closer to the bigger centres (Johannesburg 270km).

The only reason why I can really remember how many species I've bred (38) was because I made the calculation when I was still full fledged involved in my breeding and the figure stuck. They include;
Angels; all the common live bearers of course; Brachydanio rerio; Black widows; Rio Tets; Green Acara; Severum-Heckel; Oscars; (and some other easy breeding cichlids i.e. Fire Mouths; Dempseys; Orange Chromides; convicts; Apistograma; Pelvivachromis; Egyptian Mouthbreeders; Tilapia, etc.) Blind caves; most types of Gouramis plus other anabantoids i.e. Bettas and Blue Paradise; Moonlights; Pearls; etc.; harlequins; red eye tets; most all of the barbs (Tiger; Rosy; Cherry; Spanner; Golden; Ruby; etc.) Flame tetra; Madagascar Rainbows; and most variations of available Goldfish..... It's exhausting just to try remember all, but that's it in a nutshell. (like trying to remember when I was potty trained... so far back).

Bottom line is that I've downscaled from about 250 tanks at that time to only 40 (various sizes currently.) Also at that time, available literature (mostly by Dr. Herbert Axelrod) still listed (even) Oscars as not yet bred in captivity.

To conclude, none of them is/was really difficult to breed species.... I am looking for challenges and hope to add Bn's and Choc Gouramies to my CV in the near future.... If only I had access to breeding stocks!!!
