    Using limestone to increase pH

I was trying to determine how, peat moss and wood, effect water chemistry and went over a lot of this in detail some years ago. Tricky subject, I don't gurantee I'm 100% right by any means. But I wanna understand Back to the OP, limestone doesn't readily dissolve as easily as baking soda...

    Using limestone to increase pH

Had to bust out my notes, above 8 pH there wants to be no dissolved CO2. So you force a reaction something like this... CO2 drives the formation of H+ and CO3-- from water HC03- in the water reacts with the hydrogen and limestone (CaCO3) to form Ca2++ and HCO3- Calcium is the plant food. And the...

    Using limestone to increase pH

I keep limestone rocks in my filters for goldfish, I always considered it a buffer. If pH drops much lower than 7 they start dissolving. Limestone isn't dissolved by hard water. Acidifying bacteria, maybe.

Cory cat treatment, salt and H2O2 levels

Seems like Potassium Permanganate is available to me, which is nice to know. I wonder if its safe to dose at scaled fish levels when scaleless fish are in the tank. Want to clarify, the dose of H2O2 had no noticeable adverse effects on the Cories. Not saying it fixed everything.

Cory cat treatment, salt and H2O2 levels

Fighting something in my tank, flukes maybe. No meds available. I'm coming up with a plan, something like the TTM method. In the meantime though one of my pygmy.C who had been recovering and doing well (previous thread...

    Super bloated Angel

Unfortunatley, it may be too late to help this fish. Its not clear but the scales appear to be sticking out, "pineconing" they say. Once that happens the fish will pass soon after, consiser euthanizing to help it end, if that is the case.

    Infra red thermometer

Mine, from CT, is not something i'd depend on for accurate or percise measurements. The reading is always off by 1 degree F between measurements. Really annoyed me when trying to dial in a heater temp. Still useful though

    Super bloated Angel

An Epsom salt bath might help to clear the digestive system but IMO this is not constipation related. If air was an issue the fish would have buoyancy problems. Don't attempt to insert anything into the fishes mouth to help here, it won't like it ;) You noticed some redness? I'm really not at...

    Super bloated Angel

That's good, if it was very sick there would be no poop at all. Did it look normal? If the poop doesn't show signs of internal issues and the fish acts and looks healthy (even though its fat) I wouldn't worry more about it. Maybe fast it for a day every now and then and just keep an eye on its...

    Super bloated Angel

I would only attempt treating the fish with Meds if you had a quarantine tank and knew exactly what you were treating (we don't know yet). It may already be too late and not worth the stress to other healthy fish. I would keep your water clean, try some garlic and just monitor the fish. Maybe it...

    Super bloated Angel

There is some build up of fluid pressure inside the fish, from some infection, organ damage could already be significant, that's why the fish is so "hungry". Usually fish lose control of their swim bladders when this happens and its much more obvious somethings wrong.

    Super bloated Angel

Sounds similar to a few Tetras I had. They got noticeably bloated and always ate very vigorously, like they needed to be even bigger. Looked healthy and they just got bigger until, suddenly, they clearly weren't healthy and died. I figured some sort of internal infection was responsible...

    Failing Tank Heater Symptoms

A heater failing is a bit of a lingering concern for anyone that has had one stick ON permanently and cook their tank. Its hard to know how long you can safely use a heater before replacing it. Thankfully, there are some symptoms you can watch for that can help you determine if it may be time...

    Hydra Infestation

Take the stuff you want, alive, out of the tank. Heat up the water to 40C for an hour or two. You really need to go nuclear on these things, they will come back if you don't kill or remove it 100%.
