No - you don't need them if you have sufficient surface area, surface water movement and not over-stocked tank. If you still need it, you can get an attachment for where the filter outlets to the water that sucks in air (for many brands anyhow depending on the filter type).

Are we talking actual particles or a film on top?

I believe that mine also appeared some weeks or months after getting new plants and my theory is that the eggs are not only tiny but can lay dormant for a long period. I strongly doubt that these can live as snails out of the water for any length of time.

Does your tank have a particular model name or number please? It's also interesting you say the filtration is in the hood! There's a lot of stuff going on in that hood!

Wow, that's amazing. It looks like I have a miniature version of ramshorn snails. Either that, or something is stopping them in their tracks when they are a few mm big but I can't see that being the case can you?

Does anyone have any resources or a list of snails to help ID. I've tried taking a picture but they are too small without a macro lens. Tiny little snails about 2 mm big, don't grow any bigger. Yeah - but it sucks to anyone desperately trying to get fry of any kind and watching brood of eggs go pale and die possibly infertile time after time. I'm sure in nature anything goes, whole swathes of things go extinct, just don't want to see it happen in my tank, thank you very much.
