I was feeding my breeding tank of platys and mollies and dried mix of bloodworm and daphnia. It was excellent feed because you could rub it in your fingers and the resulting dust was perfect for the fry.
Anyway, I took to feeding my fry about 6 times a day but this had an effect on what was being left behind in the food container.
The food container had use by date of a couple of years, but I don't think the company had researched what would happen if you opened the top so many times a day, and I can only assume that every time you opened it, it was getting swamped with moist air. (at least this is my theory - feel free to bring your own theories)
The fish started dying. There were about 40 mollies in there and I was trying to offload them, so before you shout at me "over-stock!" well it wasn't really, and from my other post you know I have two filtration systems and extra aeration.
Anyhow, they started dropping like flies and I couldn't figure out what it was. Most of them died. And then my other half sniffed in the food tub and reached. It was completely and utterly stank rotten and putrid and I hadn't noticed. Still with two years on the use by.
I can only figure that moist air getting into the tub will deteriorate the product significantly. Unfortunately we were moving house, and this got thrown away, I would have liked to bring it up with the company concerned.
I bring all this up for you, maybe it's worth checking your food smells good now and then. Some fish survived and I plan to start my breeding program over again soon.
