Zebra Plecos, one of my lfs' get them ocasionally, they keep on saying they're rare, and they sell them low, but they don't get many. Are they hard to take care of? I need info. Thank you!

Hi there,

Take care, I've seen an increasing number of plecs offered for sale through the wholesalers/importers with the name 'zebra plec' being used, the majority (in fact all I have seen) are not the 'Zebra plec' L046 we expect it to be.

The true Zebra plec (L046 or Hypancistrus sp. zebra) is as rare as hen's teeth these days as the capture from the wild is banned and they do not breed at a great rate (small clutches of eggs being one of the problems).

However a number of other plec breeds look similar (especially when younger) and as such a number of people are taking advantage of the situation.
