I have a female convict and male texas cichlid. For the past 2 weeks they have been great buds. I had to remove some fsh they grew to hate and pick on. The past week they spent rearranging the gravel in my tank together. Taking mouthfulls of gravel and spitting it elsewhere. I have a good side of my tank that is now just bare glass bottom. Well , right now they're in the middle of the tank looking at each other face to dace charging back and force but not really touching, they might be what looks like touching lips every now ad then but thats its . Then they just circle each other in a fast but not violent manner. After a bit the female goes to the cleared area of the tank they made and completely lays on her side then flops around on the ground.. wtf?
They male just does what looks like he is lunging at her when shes on her side, but thy never actually mate, atleast I think they dont.

Well for one, is it even possible? I have heard of fish that can definately not cross, yet display a mateing ritual while kept comfortably together. Could probably just be nothing but im no cichlid expert so im not sure how closely related thsoe 2 species of fish are.

Well I've seen Convict x texas for sale before so I'm pretty sure they are. :)

your fish are too young to breed anyways. i saw the pics in your other thread. my male texas is 10 inches and he is just now pairing off and breeding. your 1 inch fish will not

Thats not true. There are many posts here and other places about convicts and texas cichlids breading around 1.5 inches.

Texas can breed at around 2.5-3", but it's not as likely as when they are a bit larger. Be patient.

Ogrt, im not just sayin that, none of your fish look to be mature enough to breed. they are still babies.

Oh well, either way is fine with me. The tank they're in right now is too small right now anyways. The aussie blue lobstar in there will eat the babies too.

Do you have another tank, smaller perhaps. You could let them lay eggs, then take the eggs away from them. I read in a book I have that texas's are known for eating their spawn :/

...And you didn't immediately see this as a possible reason they aren't breeding? :|

Actually they ended up breeding but like I thought the crayfish ate it all.. Strange though, right after eating it all he maulted the next mourning. o.o

not really interested in selling considering he is paired of with my female blood parrot. a small percetage of the babies will become what is called a "red texas". very beautiful fish, and very expensive.
