Hey

i woke up this morning to find my bnose with a bunch of extra bristlessticking out of the right side of his face, but not the other, its just a bunch of new bristles that came through over night. but now i just went to go check on him as i was posting this and they disapeared.

WHAT THE HELL!! ????

any thoughts would be aprreciated

DD ????

Bristlenose catfish have hidden cheek spines in the sides of their heads which they can flex to expose or hide them at will. They are used in threat & display behaviour, much like a betta flaring its gills.

Some bristlenose catfish even carry a mild venom on these spines.

Our Starlight ancistrus has cheek spines half an inch long!

Here's the extended cheek spines from a hopliancistrus.
The spines on other species may vary in size, quantity & colour.

thanx for the help

Mine's just goofy, he does that all the time. He also does that when he is not in a breeding mood and one of the female approaches to him.

Cories never bother him though - he completely ignores them...
