Wanted: Siamese Algae Eater Or Garra Pingi Pingi

I have a goldfish on it's own and an algae problem so I want to buy one of these types of fish. Does anybody know where to get one or have one themselves they don't want near Manchester?

There are better ways to control algae growth than buying fish - what size tank, what filtration, what lighting, how long are the tank lights on for per day, any plants, any CO2 kit used, and how much natural light does the tank get?

I am buying a new 30l tank with filtration, it is near a window but the blind is often closed, no other lighting, I have 2 plants-pondweed and a type of moss and no co2 kit used. I know there are better ways to control algae but I like the idea of having a fish swimming round and eating it all which is more why I want one!

I'd suggest you look at other ways of controlling growth. And btw, if the goldfish is a common goldfish (as opposed to a fancy goldfish) then the tanks too small for him too.

i got mine from meadow view fish farm in droylsden, the fish in there are very healthy and quite cheap

He's only small atm...and anyway he's in a 15l now and he's fine so I think double the size will be plenty

Unfortunately, you are wrong .

DO NOT buy any other fish for that tank, especially things that like clean water like SAE's.

SAE's also require to be kept in groups.

I have 3 6" SAE's and I wouldn't dream of keeping them in a 30L. They grew to that size in less than a year. They are in a 190L right now and I'm putting them in a bigger tank because they are so damn active.

Likewise, I've kept goldfish in a 15L before, and it was fine for a year. I then upgraded to a 80L and after about another year they had outgrown that.

Bottom line is, if you aren't prepared to look after the fish properly, you should bring it back to an LFS or to a friend with a garden pond.

Cheers Three Fingers, you took the words right out of my mouth.

With fish you can't go based upon what you can see i.e 'he looks alright, he's still pretty small' because they aren't that straightforward.

And read that thread with regards to stunting, hopefully it'll open your eyes.


The other option you've got is to look for a bigger tank - like Three Fingers I've kept goldies in small (30L) tank, then moved them into a 60L. They've outgrown that too so its a 100L tank next (as soon as I make the stand for it.) Either get a bigger tank (which is a great thing, gives you more options stocking wise) or rehome the goldie. And adding more fish to that tank would be a BIG mistake.

Now this is in the classified section, I'd like to encourage any potential sellers not to sell the above fish to this person, if you read through the above thread you'll see why I suggest that.
