A sump system is a centralised filtration unit so one advantage is you dont have all the internal filters etc.
One benefit is heating goes into the sump and not each tank which then heats the tanks as the water flows back in reducing the qty of heaters required and therefore cost effective.
On the downside if you get a problem with a fish for example ICH then you have that problem in all the tanks conected to the sump.
