how many could i fit comfortably in a 40 gallon tank?
also what would be a good layout for the tank? are they good with plants? is carib sea floramax a good substrate? how do you tell if they are male or female?

a 40 gallon? I would say one when they get larger but its going to take awhile to get there. I've had one for a few months and its barely grown, Ive read maybe 2 inches in a year. They get to be 7-10" long, but pretty wide. They will hide ALOT I barely see mine and the tank is pretty dark. They like wood, caves, whatever they can fit into really. I dont have live plants in its tank because there are no lights so they plants would just die. Not sure about the sexing

One. I love these fish. Will take awhile before it is comfortable showing itself

kept these for a few years myself.

they are very slow growers, but in a 40 gallon tank just the one would be best suited to yourself.
any substrate is ok, when small there no problem with plants but when there adults they can easily up-root anything in there way by mistake as they get pretty wide rather than long.
though in saying that they can reach 10 inches or so.

yes only one in a 40g.

remember these are long lived fish.
we have a member here with one over 38 years old!
