Plants Dying?

Hi! I have been trying to keep the plants in my 20 gallon long alive for some time now, but they continue to die. I also have this brown algae that I have to continually scrape off the plants. I have put root tabs in the substrate (a mix of Fluval bio-stratum and Carib-Sea super natural), along with regular dosages of Seachem Flourish, Excel, and Iron supplements. They do better with the supplements and root tabs but I think the algae is messing them up. They start yellow ing around the outside and then the veins thin and they die… any suggestions?
