My most well established tanks have kind of a wet earth sort of smell. I kind of like it... it smells earthy and wholesome or something to me. My sister in law always asks "What's that stink?" if she comes in while I'm cleaning filters or something though, so it really is a matter of perspective.
Somebody told me that when you have high nitrite you get a very strong algae smell, but I don't know if that's true. I always check for nitrites if the smell is strong (so far, so good).
Also, if you ever smell something like rotten eggs, panic. It's sulphur dioxide, usually from something that's gone rotten in your tank (such as bogwood) and you need to get it out ASAP. I lost my last betta because of that
