Hey all, I've just recently got 3 Kribs, and I'm really struggling to tell if they are male or female.

I think I may have two males and 1 female, but I could be completely wrong.

I just need one picture of the third, but he/she just won't come out of hiding, so it's proving difficult to get a picture.

Are they adults? If so then they are pretty easy. the males are larger to start with and have less colour than the females.

If you do have 2 males then they will fight over the female. If you can clearly see a pair form then you should rehome the lone male.

Here are mine, the male is on the left with less colour. Not a very good picture but it gives you a rough idea.

Yes I believe they are all adults, and I will be taking the lone male if there is one back to the LFS, considering I work for them :p

Now got pictures, hopefully someone can help me out via them.

Trust me, if you have 2 males there will be a lone one... either that or a dead one.

Here is a better picture of Finding_Nemo (Pete) breeding pair of Kribs.

Also, if you work for them then surely you should know how to sex Kribs?!

Kribs are new to me, and in the book I read at that my workplace, it says males have spots on their fins, and females have no spots on their caudal fins :/

Fair do's. I'm not knocking you matey!

Females are more rounded with a more brighter coloured belly, especially when breeding. Males are bigger, considerably, and have a less obviously purple belly and don't have as rounded bellies as the females. The male is the fish on top in Pete's picture.

I would say number 1 is your female, number 2 is your male and number 3 is what looks like an albino male.

That's what I thought, minus the albino part lol, he has been doing a lot of the chasing and keeping guard over the slate cave.

The other two just stay in the tall plant at the back of the tank.

They are either just colouring up or rather stressed. I would feed them on tetra colour pro, i've had some good results from using this. They will also enjoy vegetable based foods and flakes as this is their main staple i believe.

When I got home from work I put a pouch of live Daphnia in the tank.

Also, I feed them a mixture of, JBL Gala, JBL Krill, JBL Novo Bel and JBL Grana Cichlid, I also put in the tank JBL Novo Plec and JBL Nano Prawn.

So they have a lot of variation :)

i would say he is an albino, he appears to have pinkish eyes and the lack of colour. (greys etc) If he is guarding the cave and the others are hiding/shying away from him then he is probably going to be the dominant male out of the group. How big is your tank that they are in? You could try and souce another female if the tank is big enough or you have more than one tank available. Just a thought.

:good:

Good on ya mate, you certainly know how to treat them.

The tank is 98 litres.

I am looking into getting a 150 litre tank, just need to work out some possibly complications first.

I have thought about, buying big tubs of JBL food i.e Flake, Pellets, Dried etc and mixing it up and putting it into one large tub and use a small spoon for portions, but when I think about it properly it would be pointless....

The supposed albino looked a lot more colourful in the tank at work, so it may be down to stress.... But if not which one should I take back?

I have until Thursday to choose, so he may colour up.

Also that may just be a bad picture that is making him look Albino, I'll try get him to colour up and then take another picture of the 3

He's even chasing away the Glowlight Danio's and the Corydoras :|

Won't chase my BN away though lol, he is pretty much the boss and no one messes with him :p

Keep an eye on them and see if they settle in any more. Are the other two showing each other any attention? Maybe he is not an albino then, but he definately looks different to the others. Also if he is the dominant one then i would have thought he would be demonstrating fantastic colouring. How long have they been in the tank? Today? It may pay you to remove the dominant one, re arrange the tank somewhat, allow the other two to swim around for a while then add the other one back in and see if this makes any difference...

Erm, I put the female in last night, and the two males have been in there since Sunday. So still fairly early.
