Hey guys im brand new on here and to owning fish so be gentle with me! Haha

The tank is a fluva edge with 23litres, very small compared to some tanks on here but goes well with the size of my room and perfect for what I want! Nice lighting with the optional blue leds that I put on at night time and the fish doesn't seem to take any notice
Question is is it causing the fish discomfort due to the tank being small?

Recently bought a black moore from a local pet store a week ago and he/she (still can't figure out) is enjoying the tank quite well.
But its only about a inch in length and still only a few months old apparently so im worrying about for when it grows will it be too small a tank?

Also I've seen a very nice oranda in the shop thats taken my fancy and is the same size as the moore justnow, will it be okay to add this fish to the tank in the next few weeks?

Thanks for any advise guys, would really appreciate it!

Will upload some pictures in the morning if its of any use! :)

We often see goldfish in bowls and small tanks but really that's not the right environment for them. Goldfish tend to be messy fish and produce lots of ammonia. I always recommend a large tank for them. As large as you can manage. Your tank is quite small and is better suited for some other type of fish in my experience.

Since posting this topic up been looking throughout the forum and seems that a new, larger tank needs to be bought if im to keep the moore or add that oranda...what size would you recomend?

Right now the tank seems fine for the size the black moore is justnow, seems to be very happy with it and theres plenty swimming space for it.

If you could get your hands on a 55 gallon tank I feel that would be wonderful.

The bare minimum for two fancies, like your moor and an oranda would be a three foot/120l tank; the Edge is way too small, and you should think about upgrading as soon as possible, or your little fish will get stunted.

You should also have a look at the 'cycling' threads in our beginner's resource centre (the link for that is in my sig) as you'll probably needing to do at least 50% water changes, every day, until your filter grows the right bacteria to eat your fish's wastes; if your tank's not cycled, those will be building up in the water and could make your fish very sick, or even kill it.

Dont worry will be saving up for a bigger tank to get asap! Dont want to cause my wee fish any harm! So leave the extra fish until I get a new tank...and had the tank cycling for about 3 weeks before I introduced the moore to the water, used to have goldfish when I was younger (too young to remember) so my dad helped with the setting up etc.

Had the moore in the tank for a week now, tested the water tonight and al the levels are fine, fish looks good and seems happy enough. Even though the tanks too small I think the moore is still healthy but, a weeks hardly a long time! Haha

fluttermoth knows his stuff, i started with a moor and an oranda with a smallish tank not as small as the edge but soon took lots of advise and and upgraded 3 times and now have 4 fish in a 250l tank and they love it.
sorry if this sounds harsh but having your poor moor in that tank will only do him harm as goldfish are sociable and tbh doesn't matter his size they produce far too much waste too be in a tank that small.
and don't get me wrong i'm no expert yet but from what i read although the fish probably won't get larger in a tank that size his internal organs will, only causing the fish suffering so quicker you get a new tank the better.
120l at the least if your getting an oranda as well although i would say bigger the better and external filter as will be a lot better trust me tried several internal but the external is just so much more efficient :good:
ps just to add i'm still on the hunt for a 350l tank so all has not stopped just need more space and a good price

That ain't harsh at all just taking in all the advise I can get! Only reason I've got the tank that I've got now was it was a present from the girlfriend. Personally id have bought a bigger tank in the first place! Haha.

As for waste I've notice it poops all the time! But I've been changing about 30% of the water each day and clearing out the sand of the waste so keeping on top of it but still ain't good having the moore in that tank.

So you guys are suggesting obviously a larger tank, external filter, and another fish seen as the goldfish are sociable? Sorry for all the questions but I dont trust what the people tell me from the shop I bought the moore from as when I bought him they really didn't seem to know what they were talking about tbh haha

IMO it all depends on the person in the shop some dare to care. my local one does but tbh i only like talking to one person in that shop MBOU if your listening/reading lol.
But most people on this site know what they are talking about and we're all students really in the school of life so we live and learn and share cos we care :D

Some of you will be happy to hear I am now the proud owner of a 60 gallon tank! :) will be fantastic for lazy, my black moore, and maybe even some friends! So happy Haha. Still need to put everything in the new tank and let it run through the cycle but can't wait! Will get pics up soon once its set up!

One other question, seen a weird fish, can't remember what they are called justnow but used to have ones like it when I had tropical fish, its black with like whitey brown spots and sticks to the glass, seen it in a local store in the coldwater tank alongside orandas etc, sorry for the amateur description but really want to know what they are!

Sounds like you might be thinking of a hillstream loach, sometimes called Hong Kong or butterfly plec, although they are loach.

They like a much higher flow than your goldies would be happy with.

Thats it! Member the lady in the store said it was a plec, apparently they grow up to 5 inches? Gorgeous wee things :)

There are lovely, I have some :)

They do really need a specialist set up though, with the kind of turn over from the filter that would see any fancy goldfish swept into a corner, I'm afraid!
