My Male Veil tail died

Yesterday my male veil tail had an egg shaped growth on his chin that looked like it was part of him (e.g it was the same colour as him), it also had a tiny cylindrical shaped yellow thing coming out of it. I liquisuled the tank and today the tumor sought of thing had erupted so I had to kill him He was so distressed.

Does anyone have any ideas??? about what it was

The growth appeared to be on his gills and not his chin. It was really strange
