The duration you should aim for is between 10-12 hrs in a day. I would recommend you switch off the lights for about half an hour in the middle of the day to discourage algae growth. Plants are not affected by this.
How big is your tank and what is the wattage, type of lights that you have? Do you have a lot of live plants?
For a planted tank, as a thumbrule you should aim for atleast 2W/gallon for decent growth.
