Your lights will consume the most power, so if you're that concerned, ditch the live plants and get LED lighting because it draws like 1W. I wouldn't mess with constantly changing around the heater and filter settings. Say you save yourself $3 a month doing that, but then you kill one $5 fish who didn't handle the constantly changing water params and you're still losing.
