Believe me....money is an issue for me, but unfortunately for my credit cards once I get an idea in my head I generally go for it
Hence the:
5 dogs [2 Great Danes]
3 cats
1 community tank
1 dwarf puffer tank
1 Gsp tank

.......and now setting up the marine

Yes, most of us use the salifert kits

Ammonia, NitRIte, nitRAte, phosphate, ph are the ones to start with - however, if money is tight, forget the ammonia one - to be honest i have never used mine since my first tank cycle. It will be perfectly obvious when you are in your cycle from the nitrite reading.
